Dear Members of the PIA,
During July we were faced with some really frightening experiences such as the looting and riots on the back of the ongoing virus with resulting lockdown regulations.
There are also many political uncertainties with economic consequences such as unemployment, sluggish growth and a low investment incentive.
Nonetheless our country seems often to rebound from seemingly desperate circumstances. Could this be the case now as the JSE seems to continue on a growth path and reasonable return cycle. Not that I am a fundi on these matters but as a distant observer and at best a “sofa intellectual”, I do see light in the tunnel. As only one small example I recently saw articles on the completion of a very complicated bridge in Ashton on the Cogmanskloof River. The intricate nature of the design and construction methods are well worth a read if you would like to be invigorated and inspired by engineering feats of note while many focus on the despair highlighted by our politicians, press and our own faux research on social media.
So what? You may say. I say be patient, resilient and creative for the future is only one day away. At the PIA we have been planning and carrying out our extensive programme for 2021 at a patient pace and as example we have had some really inspiring entries for our bi-annual Awards of Merit programme and our ongoing creative IDEAS Conference and Professional Practice Sessions are well attended with positive response.
Our other liaisons and communications continue with the City Council, SACAP, SAIA, NDPW+I, Prahg, etc. and our PIA administration continues on the sound tracks of a proven record and again a special thanks to Mauneen and her staff. Also thanks to our unrelenting committee members who avail their personal time to attend to matters of mutual concern. Architects are in the privileged position to inspire and form the future but require utmost patience and as an example the following.
A month before the passing in 1965 of Le Corbusier he wrote a summary of his observations and life’s work and quote as follows:
“……. In life it is necessary above all to act, and by that I mean to act in a spirit of modesty, with exactitude, with precision. The only possible atmosphere in which to carry on creative work is one in which these qualities prevail: regularity, modesty, continuity, perseverance. In order to be constant, one must be modest, one must be perseverant. It is a mark of courage, of inner strength ……..”
Continue to be courageous, modest and perseverant in achieving your outcomes and listen less to the noise around you.
Best Regards,
Jeremie Malan
PIA President
