PIA President’s/Professional Breakfast
03 May 2024
THE PRESIDENT OF THE PIA, CLAIRE, INVITES YOU TO JOIN HER FOR A LIVELY DISCUSSION AT THE
PROFESSIONAL PRESIDENT’S BREAKFAST
And the conversation goes…
“Designing with Empathy”
What is design empathy, and how could we consider it as part of our design process and daily practice? What is the value of design empathy? We will share some experiences and stories of finding a deeper understanding of people’s needs (spoken and unspoken) and making meaning of diverse contexts, places and projects. Can I challenge my own preconceived ideas to expand my empathic horison by stepping outside the shoes of the architect, into the lived experience of another person, community, stakeholder or client? How can we better frame and respond to complex design issues?
including a short talk by Dr Anika van Aswegen
Anika van Aswegen is an inquisitive person who cares about the well-being of others. She finds her inspiration in the outstretched plains of the Karoo – a silence and endless presence. She enjoys nature walks with her husband, feeding the resident birds in the garden, baking, writing poetry, and making glass art (because glass comes alive in light). Anika is also a lecturer at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Architecture, with a research interest in transformative engagement in the spatial design studio. Her completed PhD research and postgraduate Interface Studios include disruptive provocations, design empathy and shifting perspectives, by incorporating a series of arts-based methods
If your excitement didn’t even pick up slightly, come join us anyway … the coffee is good, so is the breakfast!
