The Advanced Diploma in Architectural Design course is aimed at students who wish to either transfer to the architectural programme by continuing with the one-year BAS Honours degree, and one-year MArch (Professional) degree, or who intend to (with some experience) practice independently as professional senior architectural technologists.
The Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology qualification aims to produce senior architectural technologists who will be competent to design at the intermediate level, and with the aid of the latest electronic tools, perform and control the technical aspects of architectural practice at an advanced level.
The Diploma in Architectural Technology aims to produce architectural technologists who will be competent to design at the basic level and, with the aid of the latest technological equipment, perform the technical aspects of architectural practice at the intermediate level.

Criteria
Applicants must have graduated with a Diploma in Architectural Technology with:
an average of 70% for Architectural Design 1, 2 and 3,
65% for theory of architecture 1 and 2, as well as an average of 60% for Studio Work 1, 2, 3 and Construction and Detailing 1, 2, 3.
Applicants who do not meet these criteria must comply with the following admission requirements are required to write an entrance exam set and evaluated by the Department of Architectural Technology and Interior Design.
Applicants who have completed their diplomas at another institution must comply with the following selection processes as detailed below:
Those applicants who have completed their Diploma in Architectural Technology at another institution will be required to submit their full academic record and a portfolio for assessment by the departmental admissions committee.
In addition, applicants must prepare a submission for the Department of Architectural Technology and Interior Design, the requirements of which are available from the department. Selection is based on an applicant’s design and technical design ability, academic record, and work experience where applicable. Selection is at the discretion of the Department of Architectural Technology and Interior Design Admissions Committee.
Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology:
Qualification Minimum Statutory Entry Requirement
Higher Certificate Pass NSC with: A minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, together with any other university requirements.
Diploma Pass NSC with: A minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (40–49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects (this excludes LO which is 10-credits), together with any other university requirements.
Bachelors Degree Pass NSC with: A minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (50–59%) or better in four recognised 20-credit NSC subjects (this excludes LO which is 10-credits), together with any other university requirements.
Diploma in Architectural Technology:
Minimum NSC statutory requirements for diploma entry must be met.
An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 330.
An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Score of 345.
NSC achievement rating of at least 45% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy.
Qualifying applicants will be required to prepare a prescribed portfolio and attend an interview. Some applicants may be required to attend a three-week “preparation to architectural technology” qualification course prior to registration.
Selection is based on the submission of a creative portfolio of work, comprising drawings, sketches and other creative or technical projects, as outlined by the Department as well as an interview with the department’s staff to discuss the creative portfolio.
International applicants who are unable to present themselves for an interview must courier the portfolio or send an electronic copy with a covering letter to the department. The final selection of applicants will only be finalised after the Grade 12 results have been received by Admissions and the Department.
Please note, as a new member, there will be a once-off administrative fee of R150-00.
